Doxa Gikanji’s cracked the back of the net to put the Leopards ahead in the 11th minute to silence the partisan home crowd.
The Congolese dominated the game but poor finishing cost them more goals with goalkeeper Eric Ndayishimiye forced to make several brilliant saves for his team.
In the second half Rwanda pulled one back as Ernest Sugira scored with Jean Claude Iranzi providing the assist and minutes later Sugira missed the opportunity to put his team ahead after he lobbed the ball over Matampi only to miss the target.
The game advanced into extra time after both teams failed to find the winner within normal time, and it was the Congolese who had the last laugh with defender Padou Bompunga heading home the winner.
And in the other quarter final march, Cote d’ivoire crushed Cameroon 3-0 at the Huye Stadium to reach the semi-final of the 2016 African Nations Championship.
Goals from Koffi Mahinde, Atcho Djobo and Yao N’Guessan were enough for the Elephants to send the Indomitable Lions back to Yaoundé.
After a scoreless 90 minutes, the two teams proceeded into extra time and it was Substitute Mahinde who broke the deadlock in the 94th minute while Atcho headed in the second few minutes later.
With the Cameroonians pushing for a comeback, Captain N’Guessan sealed the win for the Elephants.
