Twenty Five houses in Mufulira’s Kankoyo Township are on the verge of collapse due to extensive mining activities in the area.
Mufulira Town Clerk Charles Mwandila has appealed to Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit to urgently resettle the 25 families.
Mr. Mwandila disclosed this during a media briefing in Mufulira Tuesday.
He says experts have been called to investigate the cause of the cracks in the houses situated a hundred metres from Mopani Copper Mine’s shaft four.
Mr Mwandila says the Environmental Council of Zambia ECZ had visited the area and made contact with the Mines Safety and Geological survey department to investigate the matter.
And Acting Environmental officer at Mufulira Municipal Council Ilunga Mutwale said land where the cracking homes are constructed is sinking an indication that the problem is complex.
