How Greeks swindled me

Screen Shot 2014-02-13 at 06.43.12It seems that for someone to succeed in Zambia, you need to be either corrupt or white. If you have both characteristics, you are even better. When we talk about corruption, we usually talk about it as a crime without a victim. I am a victim of corruption at multiple levels.
I bought a trailer from the United States in 2012, a 48 foot Great Dane, Vehicle identification number 1GRAA9026VB154902. It was going to be used mainly to store things at the farm. It was not registered for transportation. In my absence and without my permission, the trailer was taken on a trip to Mpulungu to collect fresh fish for St Nicholas Fisheries. These are the people who fraudulently inherited the remains of Sopelak Industries, the fishing company that used to be owned by UNIP.
On returning from the trip, the person was told that the refrigeration was not sufficient and some fish defrosted. Ben Veloso (based in Mpulungu) and his henchman Spyros Voutsinas (based in Kitwe) refused to pay for the trip. He went on to claim that K35million worth of fish was spoiled. There is no independent evidence of that.
I was informed that my trailer had been impounded until I pay for the damaged fish. They did not care that the trailer was used without my permission. I informed them that I was a victim too. I went to the police to complain that my property was wrongly and unlawfully confiscated and the police told me that they cannot interfere because that was a civil matter. At that time, the trailer was worth about K150million. I offered to sell the trailer and give them their money. They informed me that they now wanted K99million for “storing” my trailer against my will. I was being robbed in day light.
These Greeks went to the Kitwe High Court, the one that refused to help me, and without any court hearing changed the title of my trailer to themselves. There is big corruption at the Kitwe High Court. I want to know who signed off on that move and what they got in return.
I hired a lawyer and we have demanded to see who did the paperwork and how it was done. So far, the lawyer, Mr. J.M Kapasa is being led around in circles. The case has been adjourned 4 times so far since 2012, without anything being discussed. Next court date is March 11. It just gives this “investor” enough time to run away from the country or bribe more people. It must be nice to live in Zambia when you are white and corrupt.
There is too much lawlessness and corruption in Zambia. If the country can’t protect its citizens from predators masquerading themselves as investors, people will start taking the law in their own hands, and that is bad for a country.

Just in case you are bored out there and want to start asking questions, here is Ben Velosos’ phone number (978-584766). Please ask him for me why he thinks it is right for him to prey on Zambians just because he is white. Spyros, who is based in Kitwe, seems to be the enforcer among these two. He is the one who has practically bought off all the people that matter at the Kitwe High Court. His number is 0978581548. Ask him how he managed to register the trailer without any original paperwork.
One may ask, why not involve the Anti Corruption Commission? I think the ACC usually gets involved when politics are involved, especially an opposition politician. I hope someone, anyone, asks some questions before this becomes a personal vendetta. As usual, I expect retaliation from the network of people he has bribed in Kitwe.
