Human Rights Defenders tell Zambia to cease judicial harassment

Front Line Defenders or The International Foundation for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders,  an Irish-based human rights organisation has called for quashing of the 6 year jail sentence against Gregory Chifire.

And Front Line Defenders has listed Chifire as one of the Human Rights Defenders in the world facing imprisonments, deaths from their respective governments for taking a stand against corruption.

Front Line Defenders condemned the sentence against Gregory Chifire saying its part of wider efforts by the Zambian authorities to target human rights defenders in the country who expose corruption and seek to hold officials to account.

Front Line Defenders urged the authorities in Zambia to:

1. Immediately release Gregory Chifire and quash the sentence against him;

2. Cease targeting all human rights defenders in all circumstances so that they are able to carry out their legitimate human rights activities without fear of reprisals and free of all restrictions including judicial harassment.
