United Party for National Development President Hakainde Hichilema has announced that he will run for republican presidency this year.
Hichilema declared his candidature Sunday morning on a local radio station, Joy FM.
Hichilema also announced that his party will contest all the parliamentry positions in Zambia during the general elections.
The UPND and another opposition party, the Patriotic Front led by Michael Sata have been in a electoral alliance where it was expected that they would support one presidential candidate.
The alliance has all but broken down following disagreement on which leader should be allowed to run on behalf of the two parties. Both parties believe that their president is popular than their partners and therefore should lead the alliance.
The UPND is expected to formally announce that it has pulled out of the alliance this coming week.
