Impeachment process begins

Patriotic Front (PF), Secretary General Wynter Kabimba has officially writen to speaker of the National Assembly to begin the impeachment of president Rupiah Banda.

Mr. Kabimba, a former Lusaka town clerk, wrote to the speaker on behalf of the UPND and PF and some unnamed MMD MPs.

Mr. Kabimba is a lawyer by profession and the letter is written on his company letterheads WM Kabimba and Company.

Though the letter to notify Speaker Amusaa Mwanamwaamba is dated July 21, 2009, it was only delivered today 22nd July.

According to Mr. Kabimba, MPs want to impeach president Banda because of various breaches of the Republican Constitution from the time he acted as president.

The period of alleged breaches of the constitution, according to Mr. Kabimba, stretches from the time Mr. Banda was just an acting president.

“We would like to inform you that we have been instructed to peruse and advise our clients from the three named political parties the various breaches of the articles of the Republican Constitution by the President of the Republic of Zambia, Mr. Rupiah B. Banda for presentation of the motion for impeachment to your office,” read part of the notice.

The full impeachment motion which will contain the full grounds will be presented to the speaker within 14 days from the date the notice was issuedSpeaker Mwanamwaambwa.
