Independence stadium to be ready for 2010

Sport, Youth and Child Development Minister, Kenneth Chipungu has disclosed that the Independence stadium in Lusaka would be ready for use before the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.

Mr. Chipungu said the Chinese Contractor, Anhui Construction Company, that has been engaged to construct an ultra modern stadium in the Copperbelt province would also work on Lusaka’s independence stadium soon as they complete works in the Copperbelt.

He expressed optimism that the Anhui construction company will do a good job because of the company’s background of building stadia, Airports and Hotels in many parts of the world.

He said that this was the reason why the company has won a tender to rehabilitate both the Independence and Maramba stadiums.

Mr. Chipungu said the completion of the Independence stadium will add value to the development of sports infrastructure in the country, noting that this will enable various teams coming from abroad to use the Zambian sports facilities before going to South Africa for the 2010world cup games.

Meanwhile, Mr. Chipungu has urged stakeholders and other cooperating partners to assist government in the national teams’ preparation for the Africa cup and World cup qualifier next year.

He added that even if the national soccer team did not perform to the expected standards recently, there was still room for it to qualify for two big tournaments slated for next year.
