London based Media Legal Defence Initiative says it will support the Zambian Watchdog against the latest threats from the Zambian government.
A statement posted on the Medial Legal Defence Initiative website says:
Zambia’s newly appointed information and broadcasting minister, Chishimba Kambwili, yesterday vowed to do everything in his power to shut down the Zambian Watchdog, a news website that reports on Zambian news and current affairs. He reportedly stated that, “I want to warn the Watchdog that ministers have failed to close the Watchdog. I have never started a crusade and failed … You can run but you can’t hide.”
The Media Legal Defence Initiative has stated that it will support the Zambian Watchdog to fend off any legal challenges against it. MLDI has provided support to the Watchdog for the defence of such challenges in the past and will continue to do so.
MLDI’s Chief Executive, Peter Noorlander, said, “Mr Kambwili’s statements are clearly intended to silence, through fear, one of the few independent sources of information in Zambia. Our mission is to help independent media resist such threats and abusive legal challenges. We will continue to stand by the Zambian Watchdog as we stand by other independent media all over the world.”
