North Western Province Permanent Secretary, Dr Eustern Mambwe has expressed disappointment that over K800 million Poverty Reduction Programme (PRP) meant for rehabilitation of Basic and High schools is still lying idle.
Dr. Mambwe said he was shocked to find out that there were a lot of dilapidated schools and unfinished schools in the province while the money was not being spent.
He directed the Provincial Buildings Engineer and the Principal Accountant to ensure that the money for rehabilitation of schools was disbursed before the end of the financial year.
Dr. Mambwe said this in an interview with NAIS after inspecting PRP projects at Nyatanda and Mavili schools in Chavuma’s west bank during his familiarization tour of the district.
He said government was working around the clock to ensure that children receive quality education as leaders of tomorrow.
Dr. Mambwe said his office had released funds for the rehabilitation of desks which would be distributed to schools in the province soon so that children are not sitting on floors when learning.
Meanwhile, Dr. Mambwe has instructed that all supervisions of buildings should be left to the provincial buildings engineer alone.
He said government was losing a lot of money doing same projects year in and year out because of unqualified people certifying works.
Dr. Mambwe urged councils to consult the provincial buildings office for any construction works they were under taking so that only reputable contractors are given contracts.
