Breakfast mealie meal has run out in most of the major outlets in Kabwe, the commodity is only found with some traders in some compounds who are taking advantage of the shortage and selling at K100 to K110.
Due to lack of money among most consumers in the former mining town the black market compound traders have been buying mealie meal in bulk and later resale it at higher prices. Yesterday, there was a near stampede at Shoprite as people struggled to get the Mealile brand mealie meal which came in two truckloads and within two hours it was finished.
A check at Simba, National Milling and Shoprite outlets in the central business district revealed that breakfast was only in 10 kg bags while only roller meal was in 25 Kg bags. The commodity is expected in Simba and Shoprite tomorrow or Friday while National Milling is uncertain.
A n elderly woman found waiting for mealie meal at Simba outlet had this to say…”Awe ba Lungu balatwingisha muchipowe elyo ningumfwa ati balifye mupepi, eichi chine bakanine ukwisa kuno kabwe kutina imisebanya (This Lungu will land us into hunger and I am also informed that he is just nearby in the province, I think the m,ain reason he feared coming to Kabwe was such embarassment)”.
