Central Committee National Youth Chairperson Chishimba Kambwili has threatened to fight Secretary General Edgar Lungu if he doesn’t allow the holding of a General Conference.
Reacting to Lungu’s statement that the Central Committee will decide and determine how the selection or election of the presidential candidate for the upcoming by- election, Kambwili said the party should adhere to the provisions of the Constitution.
In his earlier statement to the media, Lungu stated that the Central Committee might rely upon Article 58 (l) and (m).
He said the Central Committee is empowered to vary and change rules including certain provisions in the Constitution to promote public interest.
But Kambwili has warned that he will fight until the way he fought Guy Scott over the dismissal of Lungu as Secretary General.
“Let me warn Edgar that he should not antagonise us and he should not use short cuts”.
But many are concerned that the Party doesn’t have time and resources to hold a General Conference and have adequate time to sell it’s candidate.
Further leaders are concerned that party officials have been at loggerheads for 3 years and the Conference might be a melting pot of anger and division.
“Edgar must know that we are mourning. He should not engage himself in activities that will abrogate the party constitution” said Kambwili.
The Central Committee will meet on Thursday 13th November 2014 to resolve the issue of the Presidential Candidate.
Kambwili, former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM), Miles Sampa are pushing for General Conference and are already canvassing across the country from potential delegates.
“We believe in procedure, and the Constitution is very clear how a President is picked” Kambwili insisted.
But Edgar Lungu warned that candidates already engaged in acts of corruption and bribery to woo support are importing illicit practices that are alien to the PF.
