Former Catholic Priest Frank Bwalya, working with ex convict Richard Sakala and information minister Chishimba Kambwili have launched a scheme to oust Foreign affairs minister and Bahati MP Harry Kalaba from the PF.
It is not yet clear if the two have the blessings of president Lungu, but even if they have, Lungu is just using them as parallel information indicates that Lungu does not want a Bemba as running mate.
Kalaba has been positioning himself as President Edgar Lungu’s running mate in the 11th August election but this has not gone well with Kambwili who is also an interested party. Kalaba has so far lobbied for support from Luapula chiefs who have told Lungu through an envoy that if he is left out then they would give their support to UPND’s Hakainde Hichilema.
A source from the PF central committee has disclosed that Kalaba enjoys some respect and support from within the party’s hierarchy and has since gained endorsement of some minister. Bwalya was on Friday sent by Kambwili to go and denounce Kalaba on Hot FM under the disguise of reacting to Hichilema’s earlier appearance on the same radio station.
During the radio programme, Bwalya disclosed that he knew one MP who was going round the country and asking chiefs to ‘blackmail’ Lungu into picking him as his running mate. He said that the named MP, in apparent reference to Kalaba was a danger to the party and Lungu’s life. Bwalya’s comments were also widely covered in Sakala’s Daily Nation newspaper.
Kambwili wants to play it smart so that is where Frank comes in, he is being paid and since he is a hungry guy he is able to fight for anyone who pays him,” said the source.
