Preliminary investigations have revealed that the vehicle that killed UPND Kabwe district chairlady Christine Chikanwa in a hit and run accident was being driven by a drunk PF cadre who was in the security entourage of PF national chairperson for youth and security Steven Kampyongo.
Chikanwa, a vibrant UPND member who is said to have contested in the local government elections was bashed together with her brother Noah Salipako along the Great north road near Mulungushi University in the early hours of Saturday 21st January after attending a Zambia Correctional service annual ball at Mulungushi university as they were walking back to her farm house nearby. She died instantly of head severe head injuries and her body is deposited in the Kabwe General hospital mortuary while her brother, a school teacher is equally battling for his life after sustaining head injuries.
After bashing the two people, the cadre fled the scene and is said to have driven the vehicle into Ndola but the side view mirror was found at the scene and has led to the identification of the owner of the vehicle. but Kampyongo, who was guest of honour at the annual ball is said to be interfering with the investigations by instructing the Road Transport and Safety Agency not to produce the printout of the vehicle ownership.
Police officrs handling the matter have said that Kampyongo has instead directed police in Central province to forward all investigations in the matter to police headquarters in Lusaka. Kampyongo doesn’t seem to have a heart for other people’s lives as evidenced in 2015 when he mobilised thugs to bring down a helicopter carrying UPND leaders in Shiwangandu and President edgar Lungu rewarded him by appointing him as PF chairman for youth and security and consequently made him the minister of home affairs.
