LAZ opposes lifting RB’s immunity

lazThe Law Association of Zambia has cautioned that lifting former President Rupiah Banda’s immunity’s now will be premature and risks being an academic exercise if critical issues are not addressed first.

LAZ president James Banda said in a statement that LAZ agrees with the position by progressive Zambians  that a proper case has to be presented to the National Assembly for the MP’s to seriously consider this issue.
Mr Banda said  it is not only evidence of criminal conduct which is to be considered when lifting the immunity of Mr Banda, but that Parliamentarians must address their minds to the question whether removing the immunity of the former head of state is not contrary to the interests of the state.
He added that the former head of state enjoys all constitutional rights and liberties of any person suspected to have committed a crime, and that his refusal to appear before the ACC after being summoned should not in any way suggest that the former head of state is guilty
