Lubinda burns houses of villagers

Some settlers of Kapyanga area in the Kawena forest in Shibuyunji district are disappointed with Justice Minister Given Lubinda for biting a thatched house built on ‘his’ land.

Kawena was a protected reserve forest until a few months ago when the PF degazzeted it and shared it.

Speaking to Phoenix News on behalf of the settlers, headman Mweemba explains that Mr. Lubinda in the company of his caretakers on Sunday the 8th of September, 2019 at about 19:00hrs set ablaze the grass thatched hut without regard for its occupants.

Headman Mweemba says Mr. Lubinda’s attempt to evict the occupant was received with resistance which culminated in an exchange of words and eventually the hut in question being torched.

But when contacted for a comment, Mr Lubinda refuted the allegations further accusing headman Mweemba of not telling the truth.

Mr. Lubinda has clarified that the hut in question is just rest shelter where a man who has been cutting down trees in his farm with impunity has been resting after involving himself in the illegality.

He says the said man has on many occasions been advised to vacate his land but has not been compliant until on Sunday when he led an ambush and forced the same man to destroy the hut and vacate the place.

The de-gazetted Kawena forest has in the recent past been a source of controversy with some villagers in the area accusing politicians of allocating themselves huge chunks of land at their expense.
