Lukulu sends SoS, as maize submerges

A civic leader in Lukulu district of Western Province has appealed to the District Disaster management and mitigation unit to come to the aid of farmers in his ward whose fields have been submerged because of unexpected flood waters.

Likapai ward Councillor Mate Mulako disclosed to National Agriculture Information Services (NAIS) that winter maize fields in his ward have been submerged leaving the crop destroyed.

Mr Mulako named the most affected areas as Nalonde,Likapai and Mutungi adding that hunger was looming as the locals depended on winter maize before the upper maize was ready.

Councillor Mulako has since urged the Ministry of Agricultural to come up with irrigation equipment to avert this problem as farmers would be able to plant and harvest early before floods .
