Lungu can use soldiers to cause confusion if he loses – Nawakwi

Forum for Democracy and Development (FDD) President Edith Nawakwi says the continued holding of offices by Edgar Lungu as Defence and Justice Minister is a threat to State Security. Ms. Nawakwi has since demanded that Mr. Lungu immediately steps down as Minister of the two top portfolios. She said holding on to the two government positions is a total threat to national security because Mr. Lungu has privileges to security briefs and in charge of the justice system which he uses and may use to his advantage during campaigns and elections.

Speaking at a media briefing in Lusaka this morning shortly after she returned from Mansa, Ms. Nawakwi noted that if it happens that he loses an election he can use his authority not to accept defeat and command the defence system to act according to his instructions.

“He receives security briefs from the Intelligence System, from Zambia Army, Air Force and ZNS (Zambia National Service) because of his in charge of all those wings. He will be using that over all of us. We need a level playing field,” she stressed.

In the second option, Ms. Nawakwi has demanded that Acting President Guy Scott uses his authority as Acting President to relive Mr. Lungu off his duties he does not step down.

She said on the contrary people saying Dr. Scott cannot fire any appointment made by late President Sata have gotten it wrong because Dr. Scott already holds that office and has to act to keep the peace of the country.

“If anything happened today to Guy Scott, but God forbid! Then Edgar Lungu stands a better chance to take over as Acting President. And looking at the use of his positions as Justice and Defence Minister and his recent conducts, he can even cancel elections this coming January.

She said Dr. Scott should act because Mr. Lungu is having an unfair advantage over the opponents in the Presidential race.

And the opposition leader has predicted that the nation is headed for an economic crisis where citizens will start cueing for commodities due to excessive borrowing.

She noted that the PF government’s huge borrowing is landing the country into a serious economic crisis that has taken the country to having huge international depts.

“The PF has borrowed even more than the KK (Kenneth Kaunda) government. As I speak now, they are busy borrowing.”The FDD President said.

Meanwhile, Ms. Nawakwi said the FDD is in the Presidential race as serious contenders and not just for the sake of participating.
The opposition leader has also condemned the harassment of the Media while refereeing to the recent Mongu case were a Muvi TV Journalist was attacked by suspected ruling Patriotic Front Cadres.
