As he continues to push his agenda for the third term, President Edgar Lungu has now corrupted some private radio stations to block any opposition parties and other opponents from being covered by the media houses. Lungu has now sponsored the formation of the Media Owners Association of Zambia – MOAZ led by former Radio Phoenix DJ and now owner of Hot FM Zacharia Chavula.
Zacharia, who was fired from Radio Phoenix is being represented in the scheme by his brother Oscar as chairperson and the deputy is Kenny Tonga, another DJ who was fired from Radio Phoenix for dishonesty. Lungu has so far paid K500,000 to facilitate for the registration and hosting of the launch at Southern Sun hotel in Livingstone. But true to their crooked ways, the Chavula brothers have not declared all this money to their friends in the executive.
Under the scheme being engineered by PF cadres masquerading as diplomats Anthony Mukwita and Emmanuel Mwamba, the MOAZ group will ensure that they don’t give coverage to people with divergent views and any journalist working for them shall have to tow the line of praise singing for Lungu.
“There is a very big danger here, as the debate on his third term continues there would be no channel covering people opposed to this and after going through they are planning to make costs of political adverts on their channels very exorbitant for the opposition, so this is a complete coup of the media by Lungu the same way he staged a coup on the PF presidency and later the republican Presidency,” said a source close to the formation.
Lungu has also targeted to paralyse vocal organisations like MISA by sponsoring his stooges to contest the positions in the MISA national executive. Current chairperson Hellen Mwale who has been receiving funding from State house was seen in a convoy of three vehicles in Eastern province.
