The 300 megawatt coal fired power station at Maamba Collieries will only come on board in June 2016 and not November 2015 as promised by President Lungu.
The development was disclosed on Thursday when Monze Central UPND law maker Jack Mwiimbu asked why Energy and Water Development Minister Dora Siliya told parliament that the coal fired power station will come on board in June 2016 when President Lungu said it would be completed in November 2015.
‘President Lungu told parliament that Maamba will come on board in November 2015 but she (Siliya) has told us that Maamba will come on board in June 2016, what has happened? Mwiimbu asked.
In response Energy and Water Development Minister Dora Siliya claimed that at the time President Lungu was giving his speech to the National Assembly government was informed that the Maamba plant would be ready in November 2015.
She claimed that the contractors later changed that the power station would be ready in March 2016 and again changed to June 2016.
Siliya said as a result of the delay in completion of the Maamba power station government was speeding up on development of solar energy and importations of power from Mozambique.
When President Lungu read his ‘promissory’ speech to parliament the PF promised Zambians that load shedding would be a thing of the past by the first quarter of 2016 but they have now indicated that it will actually increase from the current deficit of 700 megawatts to 1000 megawatts by December 2015.
