Mark Chona is fighting tooth and nail to be appointed Zambia’s ambassador the United States of America (USA).
Journalist Ben Kangwa is currently the acting ambassador in Washington.
Sources close to State House say President Michael Sata has reluctantly given Chona the job.
Sources say Sata does not trust Mark Chona but he, Chona, has the backing of people like Fred M’membe and DPP Mutembo Nchito therefore Sata has no choice but to swear him in.
Mark Chona has a questionable track record even though he poses as diplomat.
He is the younger brother to former vice president and Prime minister Mainza Chona. But Mark Chona’s character is different from that of the late freedom fighter.
Mark Chona served as special assistant for political affairs under Zambia’s founding president Kenneth Kaunda from 1968 to 1980. In 1980, Mark Chona fled into exile after allegedly swindling Kaunda.
He was only seen in public life after late Levy Mwanawasa became president and managed to have Mwanawasa appoint him Chairperson of the Task Force on Corruption. He did not last long but has since been working in the background.
But Sata’s reluctance to appoint Chona is not just because of Chona’s crooked ways; few senior PF officials would survive a security test.
Sata’s government is based on nepotism.
It will be a serious exception to the rule if an important mission like USA is given to someone who is not a family member.
