Minister of Infrastructure Vincent Mwale says he has not bought the Old Beit Stadium in Chipata but that he is just renting it on a 10-year lease period from the Chipata City Council.
He says he wants to set up sports facilities for recreation for the people of the City.
According to him, this is his way of giving back to the community. He claims he will use his ‘Vincent Mwale Foundation’ to improve the stadium.
He revealed that the Vincent Mwale Foundation has already engaged the Football Association of Zambia so that it helps find a suitable partner for the foundation in Europe.
We find this reasoning stupid in addition to being corrupt.
Vincent Mwale is a politically exposed person prone to abuse his political position.
In a normal country run by normal people, Mwale should not even have applied or responded to the advert by the Chipata City Council. He is a member of the cabinet that makes policies for the entire country. It is immoral for him to bid to run government property. Intact, Mwale is not a mere cabinet minister; he is the minister in charge of national infrastructure. Infrastructure includes that stadium he has personalised in Chipata. As infrastructure minister, he does not need to rent the stadium in order to renovate it. The ministry of infrastructure should do that. Now that he is the tenant of that stadium, what will stop him from abusing his office to renovate the stadium using ministry funds then claim that the money came from the Vincent Mwale foundation? Shouldn’t the Anti-Corruption Commission be interested in this? To whom is he going to account? Is he telling us that as minister he is going to account to the mayor of that ghetto you call the city of Chipata? No. It doesn’t make sense. You can’t account to your junior. Not in Africa.
By renting that stadium, Mwale’s fore interest is to make profit and not to help the people of Chipata. This is a lie. Moreover, Mwale is not the MP for Chipata. Why is he showing so much interest in the welfare of Chipata residents at the expense of Chipangali people who voted for him?
If our ministers have no supervision, we expect them to at least show personal accountability especially young people like Mwale.
As already confessed by himself, he is already abusing his position by using his ministerial position to order FAZ to find partners for his stadium.
Why can’t his foundation build another stadium instead of taking over public property? Is he really going to hand back the stadium after 10 years or the public will have forgotten?
