MISA Zambia demands live broadcast of Sata’s court case

The Acting Chief Justice

Hon. Justice Lombe Chibesakunda

Dear Hon Justice Chibesakunda

REF: Live Broadcast of Court Proceedings

The Media Institute of Southern Africa (MISA) Zambia writes to request your institution to allow the media in Zambia to broadcast live the proceedings of the court case in which the Zambian President has sued, in his individual capacity, the Managing Editor of the Daily Nation Newspapers Mr Richard Sakala for defamation for publishing a story with a headline that ‘President Sata is shielding Criminals’.

We make this appeal based on the precedence set by H.E President Michael Sata in which he went to appear in court to testify against Mr Richard Sakala on 21 May 2014.  We believe that the Judiciary can equally set precedence by allowing the Zambian media to broadcast live the proceedings of the said case for the benefit of this country and the opening up of the Judiciary to public scrutiny as has been the case in other countries including South Africa where one athlete Mr Oscar Pistorius’ case is being broadcast live.

We look forward to your favourable response.

Yours faithfully

MISA Zambia
