Miss Universe Zambia’s mum complains of abuse

The mother of Andella Chileshe, Zambia’ s representative to Miss Universe in the Bahamas has accused the local agents of abusing her daughter and possible looting over money meant for the event.

In an email letter forwarded to the Watchdog,  Sandra Chileshe says her daughter has been using family money for air flights and that she arrived in the Bahams late and without pocket money.

Her mother asks why her daughter had to suffer to represent Zambia.

She would also like to know what the organisers in Zambia will do with the money which was given to Andella by sponsors.

“I would like to let the People of Zambia know what my daughter and I have experienced and suffered at the hands of Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari in preparing Andella to represent Zambia at Miss Universe 2009, in the Bahamas.

“My daughter who has been at University in the UK was ordered to travel to Zambia for her official duties as Miss Universe Zambia title-holder. What surprised me was that Andella had to use her own money to pay for the air ticket to fly to Zambia to meet up with her Director, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari, who is the National Director and Franchise holder of the Miss Universe Pageant in Zambia.

“Upon arrival in Zambia there was no specific programme of what Andella was expected to do in Zambia and no proper accommodation arrangements for her. After two weeks in Zambia, Andella had to come back to the UK for her graduation. After graduation she was once again ordered to return to Zambia to finalise her duties. Once again Andella had to use her own money to purchase the second air ticket to travel to Zambia.

“During her time in Zambia Andella suffered relentless verbal and emotional abuse and endured threats from Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari, who used every available moment to do so. The threats and abuse were rained on Andella face to face, by telephone conversation as well as by text message.

“Andella returned to London on 1st August after having had a Send-Off Cocktail Party held in her honour at Lusaka’s Southern Sun Hotel, where her Director, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari was given cheques and money by sponsors and well-wishers to facilitate Andella’s participation at Miss Universe in The Bahamas.

“On Sunday 2 August, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari telephoned to say she had booked a ticket for Andella to fly from London to the Bahamas on Monday 3rd August. Andella and I left home at 4.00 a.m. in the morning and arrived at Gatwick airport at 6 a.m. for check-in as the flight was scheduled to depart at 9.00 a.m
“The Receptionist at the airport ticket counter checked for Andella’s reservation just to find that there was no seat reserved for Andella on the flight as indicated by Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari. The receptionist then asked Andella to check with the Delta Airline’s office. I was waiting for Andella and just saw her crying and my daughter came back straight in my arms with tears in her eyes. I sensed something was wrong then she told me that Ba Wendy didn’t pay for the ticket. My daughter was crying and kept on saying ´´Why Mum, Ba Wendy, why?” My heart was broken but as a Mother I shouldn’t show my daughter how bad I felt, I remained strong and reassured my daughter that everything will be OK.

“Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari knew very well that the 3rd of August was the final arrival date for all contestants representing their countries at Miss Universe 2009, reads the letter from Andella’s mother.

She also  disclosed that she had had an encoutner with the organisers.

“On our way back home, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari called on my daughter’s mobile phone while Andella was crying, so I got the phone to answer her and our conversation went like this:

Wendy: HalloAndellaAndella

Mum of Andella: Hallo

Wendy: Bana Andella, tell Andella to stay at the Airport I am going to arrange for another Ticket.

Angry Mum of Andella: Ba Wendy, What you have done is bad, you told my daughter the details of the ticket and yet the ticket was not paid.

Wendy: Bana Andella let me explain first.

Mother of Andella: What are you going to explain, you didn’t pay for the ticket and that’s why my daughter is not on that Flight, and on top of that we are on the way back home she can’t wait umungulu.

Wendy: Bana Andella also me I don’t know what happened, I paid but they sent the money back to my Account.

Mother of Andella: What will be the reaction of people of Zambia, they all know she’s on her way to the Bahamas, if they hear that you didn’t pay for the ticket, my daughter is not doing this for herself or for me she is doing it Zambia and all Zambians. (I then hang up).

She
On reaching home I called Mr Terence Miselo, whom I was told works for the POST newspaper. I explained the reason I was phoning him. And he responded that if there was another way which we could use to get Andella to the Bahamas on time. I replied to Mr Terence that my daughter did not have any money, already she had spent over £3,000 on two trips forth and back to Lusaka, which Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari had promised to refund her back and has as yet not done so.

When my daughter asked Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari for her money back so she could buy small things that she did not have and needed for the competition, like make-up and shoes for her final gown, as well as pocket money, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari told Andella to ‘scratch somewhere else’.

I know that Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari had been in Zambia raising sponsorship money for Andella’s participation at Miss Universe. I do not understand why after raising all that money from the sponsors, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari has failed to pay back Andella the money she used for the two tickets to travel to Lusaka.

In addition, Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari did not even give Andella any pocket money to take with her to the Bahamas. Andella came back from Zambia with an ill-fitting wardrobe, which she cannot even use for the competition. We ended up buying Andella new clothes to subsidise her wardrobe.

Andella finally left for the Bahamas on Monday evening only to arrive there on the evening of Tuesday 4th August. Andella was the last contestant to arrive and missed the swimwear, fashion show, jewelry photo shoot and other segments of the competition, already narrowing her chances of winning.

Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari’s excuse for not refunding Andella the money spent on travelling to Lusaka on twice and also not giving Andella any of the sponsorship money as pocket money is that she (Wendy) was given cheques by sponsors and well-wishers, which she has not yet cashed because she has not opened a bank account.

As Andella is already in the Bahamas, I would be interested to know on what Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari will use the sponsorship money that was intended to facilitate Andella’s trip to the Bahamas and her participation at Miss Universe 2009, considering that Andella is already in the Bahamas and was not given a Ngwee of the raised sponsorship money to get there.

I also would like to know why my daughter should be left over £3,000 (Three Thousand Pounds Sterling!) out of pocket to represent her country because what Andella is doing is not for herself, but for our country Zambia.

Finally, I would like to know why Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari subjected my daughter to all those abusive text SMS messages and threats until the final day that my daughter got on the plane to the Bahamas.

I still have all the threatening text messages and abusive emails my daughter received from Mrs Wendy Chanda Fornari if the people of Zambia would like to see read them!

I am the mother of Andella Chileshe Matthews, Zambia’s envoy to Miss Universe 2009.

My daughter, as everyone knows, is carrying the two Titles of Miss Zambia UK and Miss Universe Zambia.
