Reports reaching the Watchdog indicate that the MMD has been de-registered by the Registrar of Societies for non-payment of K390m in renewal fees since 1991 and risks losing all Parliament seats.
If the move is sustained, the voters in more than 50 seats have to go to polls and vote for new members of parliament in areas where MPs belonged to the de-registered former ruling party.
The MMD have 21 days to appeal to the Minister of Home Affairs, Kennedy Sakeni, against the decision of the registrar of societies to de-register it.
Current president Michael Sata was once a the Chief Executive of the party during the years the party was not meeting statutory fees.
The Registrar of Societies says he will inform The Speaker of National Assembly to declare all 53 MMD seats in Parliament vacant because the party has been de-registered.
