MMD disappointed by Sata, says will hold rally on Copperbelt

REMARKS BY DR. NEVERS MUMBA, PRESIDENT OF THE MMD, LUSAKA, SEPTEMBER 10TH 2012

YESTERDAY, SUNDAY 9TH SEPTEMBER 2012, ZAMBIA SUFFERED YET ANOTHER SEVERE BLOW AND ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY.  THE PRESIDENT, MR. MICHAEL SATA THROUGH THE POLICE STOPPED THE UPND FROM HOLDING A PUBLIC RALLY.  THIS DEVELOPMENT HAS SENT WAVES OF CONCERN AND DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT AROUND THE COUNTRY AND THE WORLD.

THE MMD STANDS SHOULDER TO SHOULDER WITH THE REST OF THE OPPOSITION FRONT AND THE PEOPLE OF ZAMBIA IN ENSURING THAT DEMOCRACY IS PRESERVED.

WE AGREE WITH ALL THE PROGRESSIVE FORCES IN ZAMBIA AND ABROAD THAT HAVE CONDEMNED THE BRUTALITY OF THE PF GOVERNMENT.  WE AGREE WITH THE EDITORIAL COMMENT OF THE POST NEWS PAPER WHICH CONDEMNED THE ACT OF ASSAULTING OUR HARD EARNED DEMOCRACY.

SEVERAL DAYS AGO, I STATED THAT, “WHEN YOU TOUCH ONE OF US, YOU HAVE TOUCHED ALL OF US.  PF SHOULD MAKE NO MISTAKE OF ENTERTAINING ILLUSIONS THAT THEY WILL SURVIVE BY USING OLD DRACONIAN ATTITUDES TO GOVERN.  ZAMBIA HAS CHANGED.  WE ARE NOW A FULL FLEDGED DEMOCRACY AND WE WILL NOT GO BACK TO THE OLD DAYS OF A ONE PARTY STATE.  WE WISH TO STATE THAT THE PUBLIC ORDER ACT DOES NOT REQUIRE FOR ORGANIZERS TO OBTAIN A PERMIT BUT SIMPLY NOTIFY THE POLICE.  THE FACT THAT UPND HAD OBTAINED A COURT RULING TO PROCEED WITH THE RALLY SENDS AN EVEN MORE ALARMING MESSAGE TO ALL CITIZENS OF ZAMBIA.  THIS GOVERNMENT HAD ABROGATED THE DEMOCRATIC TENET OF SEPARATION OF POWERS.  THIS GOVERNMENT IS A LAWLESS GOVERNMENT AND ZAMBIANS MUST VIEW IT THAT WAY.  ZAMBIANS SHOULD NOT EXPECT ANY CIVILITY OR ORDER FROM THIS GOVERNMENT.

MMD HOWEVER, WISHES TO ASSURE ALL ZAMBIANS THAT AS THE MOTHER OF MULTIPARTY POLITICS IN ZAMBIA, WE SHALL FIGHT TO THE BITTER END TO ENSURE THAT THE VALUES OF DEMOCRACY AND THE RULE OF LAW ARE ADHERED TO.

WE CALL UPON ALL ZAMBIANS TO ADOPT OUR PARTY ANTHEM OF “DON’T KUTINA” IN ORDER TO STOP THIS GOVERNMENT FROM TURNING ZAMBIA INTO SOME JUNGLE OR VILLAGE ESCAPADE.  WE REMAIN DETERMINED TO FIGHT FOR YOU AND WITH YOU IN ALL MATTERS OF INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS.

WHEN A PRESIDENT’S PRESENCE BEGINS TO DIMINISH ON THE STREETS AND AROUND THE NATION, THE NEXT DEVELOPMENT IS THE EXCESSIVE USE OF POLICE FORCE.  THIS IS A SIGN OF A FAILING GOVERNMENT.

WE ADVISE THE PRESIDENT TO PRACTICE THE ART OF DIALOGUE WITH THE OPPOSITION AND THE CITIZENS WHO ARE STILL WAITING FOR THE FULFILLMENT OF THE 90 DAY PROMISES.  ANY GOVERNMENT, ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WHICH UNLEASHES THE POLICE AND SECURITY WINGS ON THE OPPOSITION HAS NEVER SUCCEEDED.  IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO KILL CONSCIENCE.  ZAMBIANS SHALL EVENTUALLY FREE THEMSELVES FROM THE SELF INFLICTED CHAINS OF OPPRESSIVE RULE.

THE CONTINUED SILENCE OF SOME OF THE MOST ENLIGHTENED MINISTERS IN THE PF GOVERNMENT IS EXTREMELY WORRYING.  WHERE ARE THE NKANDU LUOS, SYLVIA MASEBOS AND BOB SICHINGAS WHO CONSISTENTLY CONDEMNED POLICE BRUTALITY AND ASSAULT ON DEMOCRACY?  THE SILENCE OF PF LEADERS WILL MAKE THEM UNEMPLOYABLE IN THE NEXT GOVERNMENT.  THIS IS THE BEST TIME TO ADVISE THE PRESIDENT IN PRIVATE TO ALLOW THE BELLS OF FREEDOM TO RING.

THE MMD IS GETTING READY TO LAUNCH OUR FIRST RALLY ON THE COPPERBELT AND WE HAVE VOWED THAT NOTHING WILL ROB THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE THE OPPORTUNITY TO HEAR OUR ALTERNATIVE POLICIES.  ZAMBIA IS A CHRISTIAN NATION, AND GOD SHALL DEFEND THE LIBERTIES OF THE ZAMBIAN PEOPLE.  WE SHALL OVERCOME AS A PEOPLE.

MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND MAY GOD BLESS OUR COUNTRY ZAMBIA.
