The broke PF government is planning to introduce a Human Development Levy that it claims will be used to finance the education sector.
Higher Education Minister Nkandu Luo said Tuesday at a media briefing in Lusaka that the education levy was one of the recommendations from the national education conference held early this year by the Ministries of Higher Education and General Education.
The broke PF government is currently struggling to fund many sectors and this may just be a move to squeeze more money from the citizens. The country’s two major universities, the University of Zambia (UNZA) and Copperbelt University (CBU) are struggling with poor funding. CBU has been closed for close to three months now.
Luo said cabinet will approve the recommendations but the implementation will depend on availability of resources.
