MP donates to flood victims

Mazabuka Member of Parliament, Gary Nkombo
has donated mealie meal and salt to Zambia Sugar Company employees, whose
homes were flooded due to poor drainage in the Central business district.
Mr. Nkombo said the poor drainage system in town has resulted in all the
water flowing into Nkabika Township of Zambia Sugar Company and flooding
some houses in the area.
He told ZANIS in Mazabuka today that 50 families, who included current and
former employees of Zambia Sugar Company, received the food aid.
‘’These affected flood victims are current seasonal workers while some are
former employees but renting houses from Zambia Sugar Company,’’ he said.
Mr Nkombo said he decided to donate to flood victims after floods left
them in a desperate situation.
He however complained against Zambian Sugar management for not having
assisted the families who desperately needed humanitarian assistance after
their food stuffs and other belongings were destroyed by floods.
Mr Nkombo urged companies to devise deliberate policies that aim at
assisting their employees and tenants when disasters occur.
He said although it was rumoured that the victims had been advised to
vacate the houses due to threats of floods, the company should have
assisted them.
Mr Nkombo has since urged the local authority to ensure proper drainages
are built.
Efforts to get a comment from Zambia Sugar Company Corporate Affairs
manager, Lovemore Sievu proved futile as his mobile phone went unanswered.
But Mazabuka District Disaster Management Committee chairperson, Tyson
Hamaamba said his office has not yet received an official report about the
flooding although he had heard some rumours.
