Mpondela, Phiri suffer humiliating defeat at regional athletics body elections

Zambia Amateur Athletics Association (ZAAA) president Elias Mpondela has lost the position of Confederation of Africa Athletics Southern Region (CAASR) president.
Mpondela who has been acting president of the regional athletics body lost to Botswana Athletics Association (BAA) president Moses Bantsi.
In the elections held in Cape town, South Africa, Mpondela got only two votes while his rival got 12 votes from member countries.
Another Zambian Godfreey Phiri who contested the position of Secretary General was humiliated by Sandi Helmy of the Comoros who got 13 votes. Phiri got one vote, from Zambia.
Bantsi said he won because of his country’s good record and good performances at international level.
Mpondela was the acting president following the suspension of South Africa Athletics (SAA) president Leonard Chuene.
The excited Bansti said “Such positions are not just given on a silver platter. You really need to have worked hard to get it.”
Mozambique’s Sarifa Fadigel was unopposed as the vice president.
