MPs to elect speaker today

Newly elected Members of Parliament (MPs) will today Thursday gather at National Assembly to elect a Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Chairperson of Committees of the house.

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) chose Lusaka Judge Patrick Matibini as candidate for Speaker and Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) Lundazi MP Mukondo Lungu for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Meanwhile, the United Party for National Development nominated its Vice President Richard Kapita for the position of Speaker and endorsed Lungu for the position of Deputy Speaker.

According to sources, the MMD had a meeting with UPND officials and agreed that the former ruling party would support the candidates chosen by the opposition.

In addition, Zambia Rainbow Coalition President Cleopas Phiri has appealed to MPs to elect a Speaker nominated by the opposition so that the house is balanced.

Phiri said the ruling party must give certain powers to the opposition so that there is fairness and to allow democracy to prevail.

He also said that if the opposition preferred candidate is elected as speaker it does not mean that those in opposition have more power than the PF so they must respect the ruling party at all times.
