Mukobeko prison condition shocks Catholic Bishops

Sleeping conditions in the filthy Mukobeko jail cell

The Zambia Conference for Catholic Bishops – ZCCB president Telesphore Mpundu and the other bishops who visited UPND president Hakainde Hichilema today have expressed shock at the inhumane condition the inmates at Mukobeko maximum prison are subjected to. Their disappointment comes after they had a feel of inside prison during a two and half hour meeting with Hichilema, fondly known as HH.

And efforts to have the Bishops and HH have a meeting in a luxurious office failed after both parties objected to the prison authorities’ cosmetic arrangement but instead the party had the meeting right inside the prison. Prior to the visit for today, government directed an urgent painting exercise of the interior prison but UPND objected the painting on health conditions.

The bishops who arrived at the prison at about 09:45 only left the prison at about 12:15 while HH remained in prison. A Watchdog informer positioned in Mukobeko disclosed that it was visible on the bishops faces that they were shocked by the conditions, He disclosed that throughout the discussion HH remained concerned about the economic development of the country.

The meeting started with a prayer after HH shook hands with all of them and soon after the meeting the clergy drove off in a purple Mitsubishi Pajero and did not have any discussions with a horde of journalists who were outside the gate waiting for an update.

And according to State house sources, the Bishops are expected to further meet Edgar Lungu when he returns from Swaziland where he is on a three day visit watching sugar cane plantations.
