Mukobeko prison escape: Two nabbed

Police in Eastern province have apprehended two of the three condemned prisoners who escaped from Mukobeko maximum prison in February this year.   The other one is said to be on the run in Lusaka but is being trailed and will be netted soon.
Sources disclosed to the Zambian Watchdog that the two, Shadreck Phiri and Derrick Mwape were apprehended at Phiri’s grandfather’s house around 01:00hrs today at a village along Chadiza road where they had gone to seek refuge.
The source said the apprehension was good news as it would now lay bare the people who aided the trio to escape. “This is good news because we would now be able to know how the prisoners escaped from the maximum prison, and I think whoever is connected to the escape must now be shaking,” said the source in an interview with the watchdog.
The trio are alleged to have conducted the escape with help from prison authorities and had a pistol in theior possession at the time of bolting. Initially government denied the prison break but after it was massively blown in the media, they accepted and the escapees have been on the run since February.
Over 20 prisoners were brutally beaten to death by recruits and warders in a bid to  establish how the jail break was conducted, todate despite the overwhelming evidence of the brutal murders, government has continued to deny the killings.
Prison authorities placed a reward of KR10,000 to anyone with information leading to the apprehension of any of the escapees.
