Mulungushi University Workers ditch ‘corrupt’ union

Over 200 workers at Mulungushi University are demanding refunds for the union dues deducted from them by the Copperbelt University and Allied Workers Union, saying their membership was imposed on them.

The workers have accused the union officials of being inefficient and abusing of funds as they have never presented a financial report for the past five years. They have also allegedly prolonged their term in office so that they can be bribed ahead of the negotiations scheduled to begin in September.

Some workers’ representatives told the Watchdog that the officials were working in league with the university management to perpetuate the workers’ suffering and because of poor conditions of service.

MU, like the other two major public universities UNZA and CBU has been rocked in students’ protests and industrial unrest manly due to underfunding from government.
