Today, Zambia celebrates a unique legacy.
Levy Patrick Mwanawasa stands out as one of the most successful presidents Zambia has ever had. He demonstrated that you can lead God’s people from a place of total dedication to the country. He demonstrated that democracy and the competition of ideas was necessary for economic growth. His personal values of integrity and discipline brought about sustainable economic growth which led to the cancellation of the national debt, the upgrading of the nation’s’ credit rating the honor of transforming Zambia into one of the ten fastest growing economies in the world. The list is endless.
I learned the art of dedication to duty, country and people from him. I shall remain eternally grateful to God for the opportunity he gave me to serve the people of Zambia as Vice President under the tutelage of this great visionary.
President Mwanawasa taught me that being a president is not the greatest achievement but leaving the Presidency with a legacy of having improved the lives of the people you served. LPM left a debt free, democratic and a United Zambia. Today, unfortunately none of the three exists.
A month after he discharged me as Vice President, he met me in his office. He told me that I had very strong enemies, but political decisions are never permanent and I should remain calm, then he added, “Who knows, you may end up as President of the same party which has treated you harshly.” He then told me of his story when he left the Vice Presidency only to become President of MMD and the country later. His prophecy came true when I took over the leadership of MMD in May 2012.
These intimate moments continue to inspire me and the decisions I make.
On behalf of the general membership of the MMD, the party he loved, I wish to join former First Lady Maureen and the family in celebrating this great life. He may be gone from us but his unselfish Investment in our lives remains unshaken.
President Mwanawasa proved that if we look hard enough and pray hard enough, there are leaders amongst ourselves that can serve this country unselfishly.
May the love of God, the fellowship of the Holy Spirit guide and keep his family and friends as we celebrate this great life.
President Mwanawasa, so long, so long, son of the soil, until we meet again.
