Attan Shansonga’s lawyers have resisted his extradition from Denmark to Zambia saying he is a British Citizen.
Meanwhile, the Zambian government has formally requested Denmark to extradite Shansonga to Zambia where he faces 169 counts of various charges of theft of public funds.
Shansonga appeared in a Danish court (today) Monday but was sent back to jail for another seven days to enable the judge study the request from Zambia and the opposition by his lawyers.
Shansonga was arrested on June 22, 2012 by Danish police, based on a warrant of arrest issued against him in 2004 by the Zambian law enforcement agencies.
He is a former envoy to USA.
But Shansonga’s lawyer Tyge Trier says his client cannot be extradited to Zambia because he is a British national.
His lawyer Trier said there has already been a long legal process in England and it is reasonable that it will continue there.
He argued that his client is a British citizen and he has wife and children in London, where he has lived for many years.
