The operations at Nakonde border have been adversely affected following a strike action by clearing agents. The agents are on strike demanding that the ZRA scales down the duty computation on the importation of second hand vehicles from Japan.
The strike action, which today has entered day 5 has parlysed operations at the usually bustling centre.
Traffic from both sides of the border cannot be cleared. Hundreds of trucks including fuel tankers have been unable to cross over into Zambia. Scores of second hand vehicle importers have their cars marooned in Tunduma.
The sanitation situation is also worrying because hundred of people are now scrambling for the few bed spaces available in this dusty district. Many people have left their cars in Tunduma to go to their homes to wait till the situation normalises.
Police have been deployed to thwart any riotious behaviour.
I hope that the situation is resolved soon to avert further loss of revenue to the government and the inconvenience to car dealers, truckers and traders.
