NGO says it’s not possible to hold 2011 polls under new constitution

A Non Government Organisation calling itself Committee of Citizens has predicted that the 2011 general elections will be held under the current constitution. Director of the NGO Gregory Cifire says by 2011, the new constitution being revised wont be ready. He said there are still a number of stages and steps to be reached before the new constitution can be enacted. He claimed that the funeral of president Levy Mwanawasa and subsequent presidential bye election delayed the process of revising the national law. Chifire suggested that a compromise be reached where by sections of the constitution pertaining to elections must be amended immediatelly. He mentioned the clause that provides for a presidential runmate and the one dealing with the 51% requrement for winning the presidency as some of the amendments that can be made immediatelly.
