A shortage of mealie meal and cement has hit Kaputa district with most outlets having no stock of the commodities.
A random check by ZANIS in Kaputa today revealed that most shops ran out of the commodity over a week ago.
One of the mealie trader, Kamona Kapilima of George Shoppers told ZANIS that mealie meal in most outlets ran out over a week ago and most traders have since then not ordered new stocks.
He attributed this to the transport challenges as they order their
stocks from Mansa, Nchelenge or Kasama.
Mr. Kapilima said most traders in Kaputa sale a 25 kg bag of breakfast meal at K80 due to both transportation and high costs of purchase from wholesalers.
He said they order the mealie meal at K65 from Nchelenge and transport it at high cost to Kaputa saying this is the reason for the increased price at K80 in the district.
He has since appealed to milling companies to be bringing the commodity in bulk in the district for traders to be cutting out on transportation and other costs which negatively affects consumers.
And in a related development, cement is also in scarcity in the district with all the three shops which sale the commodity having no stocks available.
Amos Kababa a cement trader at Chimputu Investment told ZANIS that cement ran out early in the month.
