No money for councils; minister says they should start farming

From trying to revive archaic, wasteful and nonproductive ventures like INDECO, the PF regime is now urging councils to start farming.
Meanwhile, most council workers have not been paid since November last year. Workers at Mazabuka municipal council were last week paid half of their dues for November 2013. They have no idea when the other half or money for December will be given to them. The Local government ministry only released about half of the November salaries.
Now Minister of Local Government and Housing Emerine Kabanshi says the solution would be for councils to start farming.
She was commenting on a decision by Ndola City Council to acquire two tractors worth K3l9 million from a grant obtained from the National Road Fund Agency (NRFA).
Ms Kabanshi said there is need for councils to venture into other activities such as tree planting and cutting grass once they get facilities such as tractors. She said, “I would like to urge the councils to venture into agricultural activities. If there are any councils that have farms, let them revive them as this will broaden their income base and also help the country produce food.”
