No Zambian ‘officiating’ at this year’s Kuomboka, says BFM

This year’s Kuomboka will be more of a Barotse Family celebrating Independence, says the Barotse Freedom Movement, one of the key organisations pushing for the Independence of Western province from Zambia.

BFM International Affairs Secretary Shuwnga Shuwanga told the Watchdog that at this year’s Kuomboka, there will be no Zambian official

‘For obvious reasons, there will be no Zambian official at this year’s kuomboka unless if Zambia officially accepts our independence before then. We MAY then have a Northern Rhodesian official as one of the invited guests,’ explained Shuwanga.
Shuwnga further explained that historically, Kuomboka was strictly a Barotse people’s traditional occasion.

He said that Ii was only a few years after Zambia’s independence that there started to be such things as “officiating”.

‘We are alright as long as we have our Litunga and the entire Barotse nation present. It is only that the ceremony has attracted international attention. Without a doubt, this year’s ceremony will be tricky. We had planned it to be more of a Barotse family day of celebrating our independence. Seemingly there are those who do not want to see us happy,’ said Shuwanga.
