Northwestern council of elders reject PF’s minimum wage

The Council of Elders in Northwestern provinces has also rejected the  PF government unilateral imposition of the minimum wage for
domestic, shop and general workers by over 100 per cent.

Council chairman Lukas  Chikoti said the government’s revision of minimum wages and conditions of service for domestic, shop and general workers was not done in good faith because it lacked wide consultation from stakeholders.

He said  that government should rethink its position and make wide consultations with the employers and the Zambia Federation of Employers (ZFE) to come up with the win-win situation.

Chikoti said this decision will negatively affect government as most people will lose employment because some employers will not have
the financial capacity to pay their workers new salaries.

Last week, government announced the revision of minimum wage and conditions of service for domestic, shop and general workers and
increased their pay by over 100 per cent effective July 4 this year.
