Now drunken policeman fires teargas, as Lungu blames victims of kafue police brutality

A drunken policeman of Chimwemwe police post in Kitwe and only identified as constable Mwamba On Saturday fired a teargas canister within police premises, leaving people who were detained in the cells and nearby residents choked. The action attracted a wrath from the residents who beat up the officer before handing him over to Mindolo police station where he is detained.

The State controlled Times of Zambia quotes Copperbelt police commissioner Joyce Kasosa as having confirmed the development and that the police man was manhandled by irate residents, and adds that appropriate action will be taken against the officer.

Kasosa says that choked inmates were also evacuated after the arrival of officers from other stations who were called in to control the protesting crowd. Mwamba, who was said to have been drinking since the new year’s day discharged the teargas after picking up a quarrel with a complainant who had gone to seek police services but was overpowered.

Meanwhile President Edgar Lungu has condemned the people of Kafue who rioted after a policeman bashed a woman of the same area. During the riot, police used live ammunition and ended up killing a man running a barbershop. Lungu said that the residents were wrong to have rioted and burn police infrastructure.

This is the fourth reported police negligence and brutality on citizens within a space of two weeks. Earlier a drunken constable Chanda of Kitwe bashed to death a four year old child and cut off the leg of the mother in Miseshi area, Kitwe. Later another Kabwe traffic officer Fabiano Banda driving under the influence of alcohol also bashed another vehicle and fled the scene.

Some concerned citizens have attributed the high rate of indiscipline in the security and defence forces to the PF cadres recruited and fused into the system and have gone unpunished when found wanting.
