Now PF goes to court to block MMD from contesting Muchinga and Chama bye-elections

The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) party has filed an injunction before the Lusaka High Court seeking to ban MMD candidates from competing for the forthcoming Muchinga and Chama North by-elections following the controversial de-registration attempt against the party by the Registrar of Societies two months ago.

But Lusaka High Court judge-in-charge Jane Kabuka has set Friday June 8, 2012 as the date for hearing in the matter.

In a statement of claim filed in the Lusaka High Court this afternoon, PF member Maureen Chinkalanga sued MMD national secretary Major Richard Kachingwe and the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) as first and second defendants respectively.

Chinkalanga asked the court to restrain the first and second defendants whether by themselves or through their agents or servants from filing, sponsoring or allowing candidates of MMD to file nominations for Muchinga and Chama North constituencies.

She is also demanding that the court declare the MMD, Zambia’s largest opposition party, as an illegal organization.

Hearing in the case involving the de-registration of the former ruling party was set for June 26, 2012.
