Now water blues in kitwe leads to loss of lives

SOME Wusakile Township residents in Kitwe this morning complained about the erratic water supply in the area which has so far led to the loss of five lives who have been hit by motorists while crossing the Kitwe-Ndola dual-carriage-way to fetch water near Amstrong night club in Miseshi Township.

But, Nkana Water Sewerage Company (NWSC) Public Relations Manager Damaseke Chibale said he was not aware that people had lost lives while crossing the road to fetch water near Amstrong night club, but said his company was providing water in Wusakile Township from 05.00hours to 09.hours per day.

Jane Mwansa, a resident of D5 section of Wusakile Township said the water situation in the whole of Wusakile Township was bad and this was why some people were crossing the road to fetch water near Amstrong night club in Miseshi Township.

Ms Mwansa said so far , five people had lost their lives after being hit by motorists while crossing the road to fetch water on the other side of the dual-carriage way in Miseshi Township near Amstrong night club.

“The water supply in Wusakile Township is bad especially in D5 section. In other sections like D6 and others, the water supply is also bad. Some sections receive water for less than an hour, while some times there is no water at all.

“This is why you find people crossing the dual carriage-way to fetch water on the other side of the road and this has resulted in some people losing lives after being hit by motorists while crossing the road. So far, five people have been killed by motorists while crossing the road to fetch water,” Ms Mwansa said.

On the comments by NWSC Public Relations Manager Damaseke Chibale that the water utility company was providing water from 05.00hours to 09.00hours in the area, another resident Cleopatra Chilufya said it was not true that the water utility company was providing water in the area in the morning.

Ms Chilufya urged Mr Chibale and NWSC to just work hard and improve the water supply in the area, instead of telling lies to save their face of failure.

She also urged the area MP Richard Musukwa to ensure that water supply was improved, garbage collection and other things were improved in the area instead of allowing himself to be misled by people close to him who were telling him that everything was fine.

“Mr Chibale should stop telling lies and concentrate in improving service delivery. We want to have proper water supply. He should be ashamed even to say that NWSC provide water from 05.00hours to 09.00hours. He should be looking at providing proper water supply.

“Even this MP Musukwa, he should not just appear on ZNBC TV to sing praises for PF Government, when there is nothing on the ground, he should work hard to improve people’s lives. He should work on ensuring that people receive good water supply, garbage collection is improved and others to gain and hold the confidence of the electorate,” said Ms Chilufya.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Musukwa failed as his phone went unanswered, while Mr Chibale said his company was providing water in the area from 05.00hours to 09.00hours.

After 09.00hours, NWSC was providing water in the area through a water bowser.

He, however, said the company has a long term plan of improving water supply in the area through laying of water pipes that would improve water supply.
