Opposition push Kapita for speaker and vow to win

Opposition political parties have floated UPND Vice President Richard Kapita for the position of Speaker of the National Assembly.

UPND Spokesperson Charles Kakoma says the opposition have also agreed to field MMD Lundazi Member of Parliament Mkhondo Lungu for the position of Deputy Speaker.

Mr Kakoma says the opposition will also go ahead to field FDD Chasefu MP Chifumu Banda for the position of Deputy Chairperson for the Committees of the whole house.

Movement for Multi party Democracy (MMD) National Chairperson Michael Mabenga has vowed that the opposition will wrestle for the position of National Assembly speaker from the ruling Patriotic Front (PF).

Mabenga disclosed that PF has the minority in parliament and cannot impose its preferred candidate on the people.

He said political parties must learn to share power and not be selfish as Zambia is a multi party state and should uphold the tenets of democracy.

Mabenga also appealed to the Members of Parliament (MPs) in the opposition to unite and ensure they choose a speaker who will have the support of the majority of members in the house.
