PAZA to hold symposium on media regulation

Journalists_protestThe Press Association of Zambia (PAZA) will hold a one-day national media symposium on self regulation on Monday, 14 December, 2009 at the Mulungushi International Conference Center, says association executive secretary Patson Phiri.

Information Minister Ronnie Shikapwasha and US Ambassador to Zambia Donald Booth will grace the conference that is expected jump-start an all-embracing national road-map towards self media regulation, said Phiri in an email statement to the Watchdog.

He said the conference will be a raiser of the extensive program that has been put together by the media liaison committee in reaction to the 6-month ultimatum given by the government to the media to regulate itself or face a government sponsored statutory instrument that has already attracted wide rejection.
“For this symposium, PAZA has invited a renowned US journalist, Victoria O’Hara (based in South Africa). Ms O’Hara is expected to arrive in Zambia this Sunday, 13 December, 2009. It is hoped that her vast experience and wide knowledge about media freedoms and her vast understanding of media issues will help guide the discussions to their required premises,” said Phiri.
He revelaed that local corporate and economist Chibamba Kanyama and UNZA senior Lecturer, Kenny Makungu will be the other speakers at the national symposium.
