Petitioned ECZ considers changing bye-election date from Saturday

The Electoral Commission of Zambia ECZ is consulting on possibilities of again changing the date for the Chilanga and Mpulungu Parliamentary by-elections.

Various stakeholders have written to the commission requesting a change in the date from Saturday October 30 to a working day.

ECZ Director Dan Kalale says the commission is consulting the Ministry of Education and other stakeholders over the possible postponement of the election date.

Mr. Kalale was speaking to ZNBC news in an interview in Lusaka monday.

The ECZ had initially set Thursday October 28 as the date for the two by-elections but moved it to Saturday October 30 to allow examination classes to proceed without interruption.

However, this has prompted many electoral stakeholders to request the commission to move the polls to a working day.

They have complained that a number of voters who worship on Saturday may be disfranchised.
