Copperbelt police commissioner Charity Katanga has confirmed the abduction of a 45-year-old UPND member by two masked men in Luanshya hours before he filed in his nomination papers.
In an interview yesterday, Katanga said Sonely Mwenya of Senior Farm in Kafubu block was abducted around 02:00 hours on August 15, 2017.
She said Mwenya was abducted before going to file his nomination for a by-election.
Katanga said three political parties filed nominations – PF, who are fielding Robert Chisupa; Rainbow Party fielding Percy Chisamba, and UPND, as an alternative, fielding Fred Chikasati.
“We received a report from Luanshya Central Police of abduction from Maureen Mulenga that her husband, Sonely Mwenya, had gone missing at 02:00 hours. This Mwenya is from Senior Farm in Kafubu bloc and was abducted by masked men who demanded for his credentials,” Katanga said.
She said the abductors wanted to use Mwenya’s credentials in the nominations and that the UPND member was later found on Mukolwe Masagano road where he was allegedly dumped.
Katanga said Mwenya told that people he had not suffered any injuries.
And UPND district secretary Frank Manungayo said Mwenya, who was adopted for the by-election, went missing at 02:00 hours.
He said Mwenya was later found around 19:00 hours near a bush on Masangano road.
“We were supposed to file in for nominations as UPND in Chikwi ward but we had interviews with two of our candidates who had applied and one of our popular candidate, Mr Sonely Mwenya, was adopted but he was later reported missing at 02:00 hours and was later found at 19:00 hours.”
