PF cadre Chumbwe’s Gold mine ‘closed’

Government has halted operations at a gold mine owned by PF cadre and Chongwe Mayor Geoffrey Ch

umbwe in Chongwe.
Ministry of Mines Director for Mine Safety Department Gideon Ndalama has disclosed that the mining of gold at Eyethu Sonke Mining limited has been suspended due to failure to adhere to licence conditions.
The mine popularly called Chumbwe mine in Chongwe has been accused of endangering the miners and surrounding communities due to failure to secure explosives.
The 75 meter deep mine has also been using a small bucket to lower miners down in violation of safety standards. The crushers at the mine are also not secured.
The suspension of mining operations at the mine follows concerns that were raised concerning the poor safety standards at the mine.
All the workers working at the mine are not permanent employees.
But Chumbwe tried to justify the use of a dangerous shaft (Bucket) stating that the mine shaft has been in use since the 1960’s and that he was just trying to create employment.
