PF condemns lawlessness among opposition political parties

STATEMENT BY HON. FACKSON SHAMENDA, MP, ACTING MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND BROADCASTING SERVICES AND CHIEF GOVERNMENT SPOKESPERSON ON GROWING LAWLESSNESS AMONG POLITICAL PARTY CADRES AND DR. MICHAEL KAINGU’S ATTACKS ON THE ACC AND GOVERNMENT

Government condemns in the strongest terms the culture of lawlessness among political party cadres.

Government is particularly concerned that a person as well off as Mr. Hichilema would sink so low as to use vulnerable sections of our society to engage in lawlessness for his political capital.

Zambians have nothing to gain from such selfish acts, except to plant seeds of lawlessness, disunity and disorder in the nation.

We have enough lessons to learn from what is happening in other countries and Zambia cannot afford the luxury of descending into such anarchy.

A case in point is yesterday’s fracas at Woodlands Police Station where opposition UPND cadres clashed with police when their leader Mr. Hakainde Hichilema was summoned there.

Government is particularly disappointed that this happened in total disregard of prior police warning for the UPND party cadres to stay away from the police station when their leader is called there.

This impunity and disregard for law and order is unacceptable and perpetrators are warned of stern action in line with the provisions of the law.

Government has a duty to protect life and property and will therefore not allow a break down of law and order at the hands of irresponsible and indisciplined party cadres regardless of their political affiliation.

Further, Government will not allow acts of deliberate provocation of law enforcement agencies in their course of duty to maintain law and order.

Government also finds as unacceptable attacks attributed to MMD vice president for politics Dr. Michael Kaingu that the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is shielding corrupt Ministers.

This is a transparent and accountable Government which has nothing to hide. Dr. Kaingu like any other citizen, is free to approach the ACC on any matter of concern to him and not issue malicious allegations in the media against Government leaders which he cannot substantiate.

Contrary to Dr. Kaingu’s allegations, this Government has proved beyond doubt that it is neither selective nor protective of certain individuals in the crusade against corruption.

The fact that there are so many cases of alleged corruption either being investigated or before the courts of law, is testimony that there are no sacred cows in the fight against corruption under the PF Government.

Government reaffirms its resolve and determination to fight corruption because it is an evil that destroys and rolls back development while fattening the pockets of a few selfish individuals.
