The PF has started preparing for the Chisamba by election currently held by convicted MMD MP Moses Muteteka and plan to adopt former first lady Maureen Mwanawasa, the party plans to push the Supreme Court to quickly hear Muteteka’s appeal case and give him a suspended sentence.
Sources from the PF central committee have told the Zambian Watchdog that Muteteka who has been convicted of motor vehicle theft has been asked to surrender the seat so that he can be given a suspended sentence in the Supreme Court. Maureen is Muteteka’s first cousin and the party has said they would only do Muteteka ‘a favour’ in the Supreme Court if she (Maureen) accepts to stand on PF ticket. Muteteka’s appeal case is likely to be heard before June this year.
“Muteteka is terrified to go to jail and as you know he is very sick, so the government has tricked Maureen that he can only be given a suspended sentence on condition that she accepts to stand on PF ticket because they fear that they will lose if they feature any other candidate, they don’t want to repeat the embarrassment they suffered in Katuba constituency, so Maureen is doing it for her cousin and that is why you have of late seen her being so much at public functions,” said the source.
Over the weekend ceremonial vice president Guy Scott was in Chisamba holding a series of meetings to prepare ground for the by election. Chisamba, like Katuba and Keembe is an opposition dominated constituency where the PF have no support.
